What Psychedelics Teach Us About Play

We are in the midst of a new psychedelic renaissance. Drugs like MDMA and psilocybin are being ushered into mainstream medicine, promoted as miracle cures for a host of psychiatric woes. But as psychedelics come to be seen as treatments for various types of psychological suffering, we are overlooking one of their most precious offerings: the potential for play.

“Neuroplasticity” is the word many mental health professionals are now using to describe the positive effect of psychedelics; a process in which the brain sort of loosens up, becoming flexible and open to learning (Children’s brains, for instance, are highly plastic.) Plasticity is why researchers believe psychedelics show promise in helping individuals who are suffering from psychological complaints related to obsessive…

What the Texas Abortion Pill Ruling Could Mean for People Seeking Care

On Apr. 7, just before the holiday weekend, a federal judge in Texas delivered a long-awaited ruling with an unprecedented (and, to health experts, baseless) conclusion: that mifepristone, a drug used in more than half of all abortions performed in the U.S., had not been properly approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 23 years ago. The temporary withdrawal of the drug, expected to go into effect on Apr. 14 if no legal challenges succeed in the days beforehand, would immediately take the most commonly used abortion method off the table across the country.

Here’s what to know about the drug and its imperiled legal status.

What is mifepristone?

Mifepristone, which blocks the womb’s receptors for the hormone progesterone, is the first part…

How to Keep Pets Cool in the Heat

PHOENIX — As much of the world swelters, it’s not just people who need help with the dog days of summer. Pet owners have to consider how to both shield and cool down furry family members as intense—at times deadly—heat waves become more common.

“It’s really important to remember that if it’s hot outside for you, it’s even hotter for your pets,” says Dr. Sandra Faeh, American Veterinary Medical Association president. A dog’s breed, weight and chronic health issues also matter. “There’s not one specific temperature that we can say, `this is the right temperature to go outside,’ because they’re all different.”

In the U.S, over 180 million people, or 63% of households, have at least one pet, according to an American Pet Products Association report. Pet-relate…

Who’s Killing the Wild Horses- One Woman Is Determined to Find Out

Winter had frozen over the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in late January 2019 when Betty Nixon saw the dead stallion, known to locals as Raven.

His right leg bone was shattered by a bullet, and near him lay a red-coated pregnant mare, Sparrow, who had been shot in her belly and neck. Nearby, behind a stand of junipers, the mare’s filly stood alone, lost.

As Nixon approached, the filly took off, racing past the dead bodies of Raven and her mother.

Three years later, Nixon has chronicled the shootings of at least 40 wild horses in this forest in northeastern Arizona, where several hundred of the Heber herd, named for the unincorporated town surrounded by the forest, roam. Each day she sets out on often miles-long treks, recording the live horses she sees and t…

Your Questions About the Joro Spider, Answered

Alarm over the possible arrival of the Joro spider in the greater New York City area has sparked concern across the Northeast over the scary-looking eight-legged creature. But experts are advising residents to stay calm, calling the arachnid harmless and also questioning both whether and when the spider will arrive up north.

“There’s no reason to panic for this,” David Coyle, an assistant professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation at Clemson University, tells TIME.

The yellow and gray-colored arachnids are originally from east Asia. The creatures were first documented in the southeastern U.S. around 2013, but Coyle says it’s also possible that the spider arrived as early as 2010. Experts guess that the arachnids likely hitchhiked o…

Why Sanctions on Russia Aren’t Targeting Oil and Gas

There’s an elephant in the room. Since Thursday, when Russian troops stormed into Ukraine, the U.S., the E.U., and their allies have announced a raft of sanctions designed to hurt Russia’s economy and financial system, and make President Vladimir Putin reconsider his invasion. But measures targeting exports of oil and gas, which provided 36% of Russia’s national budget last year, are conspicuously absent from the public discussion.

Some Ukrainians are not happy. “We need real sanctions, not just some problems for Putin’s friends,” Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksiy Goncharenco said in a video posted to Twitter Thursday. “We need an embargo on Russian gas and oil because every barrel of Russian oil and every cubic meter of Russian gas is now full …

What California’s Kincade Wildfire Looks Like From Space

Northern California’s Kincade wildfire has grown so large that a satellite was able to record the plumes from 22,300 miles away in space.

The fire that began on Oct. 23 has grown to burn more than 66,200 acres of Sonoma county and is so far only 5% contained. As of Monday, three people have died, at least two first responders have been injured, 96 structures like homes and businesses have been destroyed and an additional 16 structures have been damaged. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) predicts the wildfire will not be fully contained until Nov. 7. Thousands have had to evacuate their homes throughout the state, and thousands more have been left without power as a result of precautionary outages.

In order to better visualize the Kinc…

What to Know About Damar Hamlin’s Heart Event

Nobody watching the Jan. 2, 2023 National Football League game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals will forget the searing sight of Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsing to the turf after an otherwise unremarkable tackle late in the game’s first quarter led to his cardiac arrest. Emergency CPR and the use of a defibrillator saved his life, but the now 25-year-old spent a week in intensive care at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC), where he was rushed straight from the field, as doctors fought to restore him to health and determine the cause of his near-death experience. He was later transferred to a Buffalo-area hospital where he spent several days before being released, having made a full recovery.

On Apr. 18, at a press conference at the Bills&…

This Musician Powered His Concerts with Batteries and Wind

On a warm August evening, Danish pop act Lukas Graham pulled up to his 15,000 person off-grid show at an old military base just outside Aalborg, towards the northern tip of Denmark, with a new form of concert power in tow: electric truck batteries charged up with wind turbine energy.

“We just rolled in with these big batteries. We didn’t need the generators. It just felt so good,” says Graham. For festival fans, outdoor concerts are a chance to appreciate music in natural surroundings, but backstage, gallons of diesel are being burned to power the lights and sound. Graham describes these diesel generators as sounding like “a big-ass car or truck just running on standby.”

“That smell of diesel burning—it’s not here,” Graha…

What the War on Oil Must Learn from the Failed War on Drugs

Can the war on oil be won? The future is uncertain, but we should look to another “war” lessons on this one. For fifty years, the United States has fought an “all-out offensive” on another commodity and been utterly defeated—drugs. Ever since Richard Nixon declared illegal narcotics “public enemy number one,” presidents of both parties have faced a paradox. The harder they fought the criminal enterprises behind the trade, the larger the market for drugs became.

Is there a lesson to be learned by climate change activists? If we are going to win the war on fossil fuels, we need to avoid the total failure of the war on drugs.

The Price Paradox

The U.S. has long fought drugs by fighting drug dealers. It conceived of the dr…

Why the SEC’s New Climate Rules Could Divide Corporate America

Even couched in wonky, legalistic language, the difference in tone between the American Bankers Association (ABA) and the American Petroleum Institute (API) is hard to miss. Last year, following a request for feedback from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the two trade groups presented vastly different pictures of the role the market regulator should play to make sure investors understand the risks climate change poses to companies.

The ABA declared its support for a “climate risk disclosure regime” shaped by the commission that takes into account climate science, international standards, and risk modeling. “Information about climate-related financial risks and opportunities will allow lenders and investors to more effectively assess, price, an…

TIME100 Health Panelists on Investing in Women’s Health

Actress and healthcare advocate Halle Berry; geneticist Marlena Fejzo; and Daniel Skovronsky, chief scientific officer at pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly, spoke about the importance of investing in women’s health at a TIME100 Health panel in New York on Monday.

By the end of the panel, Fejzo, who has experienced and deeply researched hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a condition that leads to extreme nausea and vomiting in 1% to 3% of pregnancies, pushed for literal investment in a potential solution from her copanelist.

She asked Skovronsky about a drug Eli Lilly has shelved that could help come up with a potential treatment. “I’m ready to test it,” she said. “I’m sure we’ll find a way to work together,” he responded, closing out the panel.

‘Apex’ Stegosaurus Fossil Sells for Record $44.6M at Auction

NEW YORK — The nearly complete fossilized remains of a stegosaurus fetched $44.6 million at auction Wednesday, Sotheby’s said. The buyer’s name was not disclosed.

The fossil, dubbed “Apex,” is considered to be among the most complete ever found, according to the auction house.

The price blew past a pre-sale estimate of $4 million to $6 million and past a prior auction record for dinosaur fossils—$31.8 million for the remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex nicknamed Stan, sold in 2020.

Apex “has now taken its place in history, some 150 million years since it roamed the planet,” said Cassandra Hatton, who heads Sotheby’s science-related business.คำพูดจาก สล็อตเ…

World Remains Sharply Divided on Climate Change Targets

When it comes to preventing the worst of climate change, “the point of no return is no longer over the horizon,” United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned Sunday on the eve of a crucial round of intergovernmental talks at the UN’s annual climate summit.

Representatives of more than 200 countries have gathered in Madrid for COP25, where they will attempt to strike key agreements on international climate action. One challenge is the wild variance in the impact of their domestic goals to cut greenhouse gas emissions. A growing crowd of large economies, including Spain, France and the U.K., have pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Several countries have set earlier targets; Finland has pledged to reach net zero by 2035, and Sweden has set its …

Why SpaceX’s Historic Mission Needs to Wait Until Saturday

When you’ve got a 230-ft. tall rocket filled with 76,000 gallons of explosive fuel sitting on the launch pad, the President in the viewing stands and millions worldwide waiting to watch the great machine fly, you’d figure you wouldn’t schedule the event for a spring afternoon in Florida, when bad weather stands to wreck the whole party. Those are exactly the conditions in which the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley tried—and failed—to get off the launch pad on May 27, for the historic first crewed launch from American soil since 2011.

The scrubbed flight left a lot of people asking, Why don’t NASA and SpaceX just pick a day and time to launch when the forecast is clear? The answer: It’s not up to them. …

Summers Are Becoming Unbearably Hot Before They Even Start

Why Some People Love Black Friday—and Others Hate It, According to Psychologists

If the thought of taking part in the annual ritual of Black Friday gives you cold chills rather than a rush of excitement, you’re not alone. For every avid bargain hunter who plans for the day as if training for a marathon, there’s someone else who stays home, secure in the knowledge that no one will trample them, shove them or invade their personal space just to get this season’s hottest deals.

It’s not just a lack of appreciation for bargains that drives this disconnect. Psychology research indicates that several factors determine which side of the shop-‘til-you-drop divide you land on. Some people just aren’t wired to enjoy the more social aspects of shopping.

What you prioritize plays in
