For the first time ever, Day of the Devs calls for game submissions

Public video game showcase Day of the Devs is happening again this fall for the fourth year running, and organizers Double Fine and iam8bit are looking for devs who want to take part.

This is potentially a good opportunity for devs to get their games in front of people for some promotion and playtesting, since the event is free to the public and traditionally sports crowd attractants like live music, food and drinks.

While Day of the Devs has been happening annually since it was born in 2013, this is the first year that the organizers have called for game submissions from the public. Devs interested in responding to the call are invited to submit their game from no…

Scorpio will render Microsoft’s first-party titles in native 4K

Although the exact specs of Microsoft's supercharged mid-cycle upgrade, Project Scorpio, have yet to be revealed, the tech giant has clarified the system's 4K capabilities.

During an interview with USA Today, Microsoft Studios Publishing general manager Shannon Loftis explained all first-party games that launch during the Scorpio's lifecycle will be able to natively render at 4K on the high-end machine.

"Any games we're making that we're launching in the Scorpio time frame, we're making sure they can natively render at 4K," said Loftis, adding that Microsoft is looking at ways to bring VR experiences to the system.

PSX 2015- Sony celebrates its fans and its (large) lineup

I feel like I could re-run last year's editorial on the PlayStation Experience keynote, minus the bits about how it was a bold decision for the company to throw its own event (it's a still a smart one, but now it's not new.)

This year's PlayStation Experience keynote presentation saw the company blasting through game announcements left and right; it was like last year, but more so. Sony's presentation was peppy, full of games, and fully fan-oriented.

As in Las Vegas in 2014, so in San Francisco in 2015 — the company has the stage to itself (quite literally, as compared to an event like E3 or Gamescom) so there was no posturing. It was figuratively true, too — at l…

Taking your game from jam to commercial release

Game jams are great place for working concepts to emerge. Sometimes, those concepts are good enough to build upon for a "full" game release. Nathan Vella, cofounder and president at Super Time Force and Super Brothers Sword & Sworcery developer Capy, talked about bringing games from jam to commercial release in a GDC Next talk today. Traditional game development relies on this cycle: Idea to prototype to production to launch. What game jams do, Vella explained, is break that model and turn it into something else: Jam (which is idea + prototype) to production to…"wtf?"…to launch. Capy knows firsthand about the challenges and t…

Treyarch co-founder pleads guilty to crashing drone into firefighting plane during LA fires

Peter T. Akemann, co-founder of Call of Duty studio Treyarch, recently pled guilty and took a deal after piloting a drone during the Los Angeles fires in January, which damaged a firefighting aircraft.

On January 9, Akemann flew the drone over Palisades as a Super Scooper water dumping plane was dousing the fires. His drone struck the Scooper's left wing and forced it to be grounded for repairs.

By pleading guilty, he avoided a potential year in prison, and will have to perform 150 hours of community service in support of Southern California's wildfire relief efforts. He will also pay the $65,000 cost to repair the Scooper.

According to the plea agreement, his dro…

VR dev Toast Interactive lays off majority of staff

Toast Interactive has eliminated most of its positions and closed its office in Gold Coast, Queensland.

In a statement published to social media, co-founders Toni and Richard Eates called the reductions a "heartbreaking decision." Last November, Toast laid off 10 developers, which was owed to its inability to "sustain a large indie team."

However, the Eates did not explain the circumstances behind this latest round of layoffs. Instead, they said the remaining staff will take a "leaner approach" to supporting the studio's two VR games, Max Mustard and Richie's Plank Experience.

UK indie Radical Forge laying off ‘handful’ of workers

UK indie studio Radical Forge is laying off a "handful" of workers.

The Southfield developer confirmed the news in a statement handed to GamesIndustry.biz and said it was pushing ahead with some "minor restructuring."

"This will mean that there will be a handful of people whose roles or skill sets are no longer needed on current or upcoming projects, and their contracts will end earlier than anticipated. These actions will not affect the delivery of any existing projects," said the studio.

"This situation is heartbreaking for all involved. We are a very close-knit company and proud of the people-focused culture we have created…

UK studio Splash Damage is downsizing after scrapping in-development online action title Transformers: Reactivate.

In a post on X, the studio confirmed the decision has left some employees "at risk of redundancy."

Transformers: Reactivate was being developed in partnership with Hasbro. It was unveiled in December 2022 at The Game Awards and pitched as a 1-4 player online action game for PC and consoles that would mark "a new era for Splash Damage."

It's unclear why the project was canceled, but Splash Damage said the decision wasn't made lightly.

"We will be scaling down to refocus our efforts o…

‘Last console generation’- We’ll see about that

"It’s funny, I've heard about the 'last console' since 1986, and only because that’s when I entered the business."

Sony Computer Entertainment America president (and die-hard console advocate) Jack Tretton. A PlayStation executive arguing against the "consoles are doomed" sentiment isn't a surprising scenario, but Tretton explains why he thinks predictions of the near-term death of dedicated game consoles like the PlayStation 4 are unfounded Come from South African Online Casi…

Ubisoft teams up with Elijah Wood’s production firm for VR projects

During the Sundance Film Festival this week in Utah it was announced that Ubisoft has struck a deal with horror film production company SpectreVision to develop "original and interactive" VR experiences.

Ubisoft Montreal's FunHouse division (which is already experimenting with VR) will take point for the French multinational game company in its collaboration with SpecreVision, and it's interesting to see Ubisoft reaching across the aisle to a film production company in light of its public aims to push its brands into the VR market.

Ubisoft chief Yves Guillemot has previously expressed ambitions to bring Ubisoft properties
